DND (Do Not Disturb) or NDNCR (National Do Not Call Registry)

What is DND?

DND is Do Not Disturb. It is a feature, to block the Unwanted commericial calls. This is DND facility is accessible from all telecom Operators by unsing the number 1909 . Once a mobile phone user/Land line user register his number at DND database for blocking, he will not get any commericial telemarking calls/SMS. This service is mainly to block unwanted Calls/SMS from Telemarketers.

Who is authority for DND or NDNCR ?

The service is provided by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). TRAI is the Indian governmental agency tasked with defining various policies and regulations for wireless communication service providers in India. As per TRAI regulation, every mobile service provider in India is required to set up a Do Not Disturb (DND) registry. All telecom wireless or wiredline service provider should allow 1909 .

How DND works ?

1. Any mobile/land line user wants to activate DND, he/she has to dial 1909 or send SMS to 1909 for activation. SMS format for DND is here.
2. This will get registered at centralised DND database maintained by TRAI.
3. Telemarketers will access this list from DND database.
4. Before calling any number, this will be ensured and not registed in DND. If found registered in DND, telemarketer should not call/SMS this number.
5. Once the DND is Activated / Deactivated, it will become effective in 7 days from the date of request.
6. TRAI has also raise panalty the telemarketer, who is violating the norms.
7. If you still getting unwanted commericial SMS/Calls from telemarketer, provision is aslo made to complaint about them

Are you getting unwanted SMS or telemarketing calls ?

If you say yes, this is for you. Mobile phone users who want to register their phone number for Do not call registry may dial 1909 or SMS to 1909 with keywords START 0 for registration and STOP DND for de-registration.

Is dialing or SMS to 1909 chargeable ?

No. All the telecom operators should allow 1909 service as tollfree. Both SMS and Calling to 1909 is not going to be charged
